David Zalben’s Wire-Sculpture Poetry at ArtCenter/South Florida

From June 6th to July 16, 2012 ArtCenter/South Florida will present Miami artist David Zalben wire-sculpture poetry, a window installation entitled “A Love You Can’t Live Without.”

On Wednesday June 6th, Zalben will begin writing prose in his signature wire-graffiti in the main windows of the Lincoln Road center. Adding verses to his poem every night, the storefront space will be completely engulfed by a mesh of wire-sculptures.

Zalben transforms poetic verse into a visual art form that is sculptural, but also speaks cleverly about love, pain and a feeling of spiritual growth.

“Aside from the physical challenge of bending 16-gauge wire into intricate lettering, there’s the psychological pressure of creating something in public that is normally a private process, and of sharing meaningful thoughts that are an honest expression of my state of mind.”

The spatial constraints of the 12 x 12-foot window will force him to twist and squeeze words into limited white space, breaking free from his traditionally linear and clean wire text.

After 41 days at the end of the installation process, viewers will have literally and figuratively a window into Zalben’s soul.

Zalben  is currently represented in Hong Kong by renown Karin Weber, and is preparing for an upcoming show in August 2012, Guatemala City.

Jenny Bennett To Exhibit at International Biennale Artists Exhibition

For the last year, New Zealand artist Jenny Bennett has been very active sending her works overseas following invitations from all around the world in countries such as China, Turkey and Italy that wanted to exhibit her paintings.

In 2012, she has already exhibited at the Galleria Tondinelli in Rome, at the Chianciano Biennale in Tuscany and last month, at the Gagliardi Gallery in London. For 2013, the artist has already received an invitation for a solo show at NYC New Art Center.

Next month, Bennett will have her U.S. debut at LMNT Gallery in Wynwood for the second edition of the “International Biennale Artists Exhibition Miami” which will be on view from June 7th to 26th, 2012.

“I paint to communicate my visions to others; to put people where I have been in the most beautiful and remote journeys,” said Jenny Bennett.

In LMNT, Bennett will show her landscape paintings depicting plants, particularly the New Zealand “Nikau” palm tree which is surrounded by rocks and water on pristine beaches.

Bennett’s paintings have a wonderful structure reminiscent of the Gothic arch, a richness of color and texture of the lush foliage represented contrasting the more austere and subdued palette associated with the presence of water and rocks.

It’s Bennett’s fascination with the dualities, soft, hard, solid, fluid, eroding, creating and light and darkness.

“Like Anais Nin, I believe that art [writing, painting, music….] provides us with the antitoxins we need to live,” said Bennett.

Alicia H. Torres To Exhibit at International Biennale Artists Exhibition

Colombian-born artist Alicia H. Torres is a Miami-based painter who was selected by Art & Beyond Publications to appear in the 2012 May-June online issue as part of the cover art of “living artists of today” by Corporate Art International.

At the “International Biennale Artists Exhibition” Miami, in LMNT which will take place from June 7th to 26th 2012, Torres will be exhibiting 3 acrylic on canvas pieces from her latest collection “Are you Joking” “Speak No Evil” and “The Magic of Color.

From the very beginning, Torres has been exhibiting widely as part of the “International Biennale  Artists” an organization that travels around the world producing contemporary art exhibitions in galleries and unconventional art spaces with works by artists that have participated in international biennales.

“Elisha Ben Yitzhak, the founder of the group has demonstrated professionalism, credibility and honesty giving a platform for exhibitions not only for international biennale artists but for young and emergent as well,” said Torres.

LMNT is a great venue for this year’s exhibition because it has all the “elements” necessary to throw international shows of this caliber.

“A place that combines the visual arts with fashion, film, music, and food all-in one is something hard to find around here,” added Torres.

According to Torres, painting is a visual language created between two subjects, the image painted by the artist and the viewer. As a co-creator, Torres continues to use her creativity as her motivator.

“Japanese teacher Mieko Kubota, Cuban sculptor Rafael Consuegra and Cuban painters Yovani Bauta and Baruj Salinas have been great motivators in my career,” she added.

This is the 3rd collective exhibition for Torres in 2012.

In October, she will be participating at another collective “Imagine” at  LuminArte Gallery in Dallas, Texas organized by the International Biennale Artists Group.

Anica Shpilberg Exhibits “Dancers” at International Biennale Artists

Anica Shpilberg, Dancers I, 2012

From June 7th to 26th 2012, LMNT in Wynwood will present Miami’s second edition of the “International BIennale Artists,” 56 artists from 21 countries including Peruvian-born artist Anica Shpilberg.

“Art is the language of my thoughts; I find it easier to express my  true self through my work. My inspiration comes from my experiences, my travels
and my surroundings. It drives my impulse to create a narrative and to record the
historical context in which we live today.

I do so by weaving the fragments that I photograph, capturing the spirit of people and places, their beat and their struggles, their reality and uniqueness, their lives and their environment.

Later, in the quietness of the studio I sort thru the images that “make sense” from
all that what was captured and recorded.

Some of the pictures are then printed on canvas and then I apply mixed media (paper, wood, fabric) to deliver the intended message.

Other photographs, I only utilize as road maps to paint, while on occasion I like leaving a pristine photograph alone, to allow it to tell the story in a quiet way.

The purpose of it all is to capture instances in time that form a story, one that is
interpreted by the observers who add their bias as they reflect on the images.

These series consist of photographs taken while navigating the Yang Tse River in
China in 2011.

They are frames of dancers representing the confluence of modern and traditional currents in the the China of today.”

The images are infused on aluminum and are limited to editions of 7.

Alejandro Leyva to Exhibit “Like an Angel” at International Biennale Artists Miami

Alejandro Leyva, “Como un Angel,” 2012

From June 7th to 26th 2012, LMNT in Wynwood will present Miami’s second edition of the “International BIennale Artists,” 56 artists from 21 countries including Cuban-born artist, Alejandro Leyva.

“Globalization is creatively depicted in my new line of work in which I am transitioning from working and living in Cuba to my new life in the U.S.,” said Leyva in the following artist statement:

“For the last year living in America, I have reinforced my idea that art has no boundaries nor limits, especially in a society where economic and social transformation are moved within an extraordinary cultural diversity.

This is the time when I see that I would like to incorporate these feelings in my work adapting to current circumstances.

You only have to walk the streets in Miami to witness all the cultural differences that are embraced enthusiastically by its residents; to feel its energy when they share their personal stories, all of these have nurtured and inspired my new phase of figurative abstraction.

Abstract expressionism has always been part of my work; it has been part of my being. I think there is nothing more pure and true to every artist than abstraction itself.

I have saturated the canvas abusing colors and using a variety of materials, which can only be seen when you look closely.

Acrylics, oils, crayons, construction materials- they are all mixed with aerosols making an explosion of textures, of light and shadows which will make the viewer see hidden imaginary shapes in their imagination.

This is the beauty of abstraction with its own language, my own passion that brings me back memories and emotions.  Each one of my paintings has an anecdote behind, a spiritual experience, an inspiration. It’s like a compromise reached by myself and my soul.”  Alejandro Leyva, 2012

ART BLOG ART BLOG Presents at Gallery Diet

This coming Friday May 25th, 2012 from 6 to 9PM, Gallery Diet will present Leave it to Beavers,  an exhibition curated by Gina Beavers.

This show is the first in a two-part series of exhibitions ART BLOG ART BLOG is presenting at Gallery Diet during the summer of 2012. The second exhibition in the series, ASTRAL WEEKS, will be curated by Van Hanos.

Leave it to Beavers features works by Carla Edwards, Christy Gast, Anya Kielar, Fabienne Lasserre, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Katherine Bernhardt, Letha Wilson, Denise Kupferschmidt, Holly Coulis and Lia Lowenthal

ART BLOG ART BLOG, ABAB is a curatorial project by Joshua Abelow.

From a recent interview with Abelow, “Intitially the blog was a way for me to contextualize my own work alongside artworks and text by other artists and writers I was interested in, and it still is that.  But, it’s also a way for me to curate in the simplest way possible.  To call a gallery space a blog is something that had never been done before and I think it generated a lot of interest because of that simple gesture.  It created an element of confusion – like what is ART BLOG ART BLOG – a gallery, a blog, or a website?  And, for a temporary period, it was all three.”

Last summer in New York, ART BLOG ART BLOG presented ten exhibitions at a temporary location on the 11th floor of 508 West 26th Street.  The location was generously donated to Joshua Abelow by the painter, Ross Bleckner.

Abelow’s new book, Painter’s Journal, describes in detail his first year living in New York in the late 90′s working for Bleckner as a studio assistant.

Gallery Diet is located at 174NW 23 Street, Miami, 33127.

Sandra Diez Exhibits in LAP Art Shanghai 2012

Sandra Diez wearing a Carlos Cruz Diez’ dress of her own creation

SHANGHAI-Matching the surname of Venezuelan Master Carlos Cruz Diez,   Caracas-based Galeria Arte Diez exhibited the works of Venezuelan artists at the Latin American Pavilion & International Wing Art Shanghai 2012.

Since 2005, and after working with Galeria Dimaca in Caracas for 6 years, Director Sandra Diez decided to venture herself independently to launch her own gallery space.

“I think that international art markets such as those in Asia need to be captivated introducing the works of artists and educating the public about Venezuelan and Latin American art,” said Diez.
This is the first time for the Caracas-based gallery to exhibit in China. In previous years, Arte Diez has participated in fairs such as Art Miami in the U.S., and at Feria Iberoamericana de Arte, FIA in Caracas and FIAM in Maracaibo.

The gallery has been representing exclusively the works by renown Venezuelan painter Edgar Alvarez Estrada, an artist that received the Venezuelan National Prize of Drawing in 1988 and is currently living between Paris and Caracas.
In Shanghai, Sandra Diez prominently exhibited the works by Alvarez Estrada in one part of the booth along with the works by other group of  artists that were showcased in a space devoted to original and serigraphy works by Venezuelan Masters Carlos Cruz Diez, Jesus Soto and Hector Ramirez which are part of the Venezuelan Geometric Abstraction and Kinetic art movements well known around the world.
“Ramirez is exhibiting a double acrylic box with a serigraphy inside and another one used as a background that when they are put together they create a movement effect,” said Diez.

The other segment displayed at the booth was for a younger generation of Venezuelan artists that are currently living in Europe which are inserted in a group that have a thorough meticulous work and palette.

“Milixa Moron, Elkin Canas and Carlos Martinez are promising young Venezuelan talent in their early thirties who come from the classical school of figurative work based in Florence where they work and live,” she said.
According to Diez the Chinese public seems to be passive when it comes to appreciating art that is not Chinese.
“They take photographs and look but they don’t ask much information about the artists or even the prices, it’s kind of bizarre,” said Diez. “I feel good though, this is a great opportunity for us to get visibility and understand this market.”
